Jordan Pass and visa: what it includes and is it worth it?

The Jordan Pass is a single online ticket from Jordan's tourism authorities. It covers the tourist visa fee and entry to Petra and more than forty other sites, including Jerash, Wadi Rum and the Amman Citadel. For most visitors who stay a few nights and visit Petra, it is the simplest and cheapest way to see the country. Here is how it works.

What the Jordan Pass includes

Every Jordan Pass includes the waiver of the tourist visa fee for eligible nationalities, entry to Petra, and entry to more than forty attractions across the country. Among them are Jerash, the Amman Citadel and the Roman Theatre, Ajloun Castle, Kerak Castle, Umm Qais, the Wadi Rum Protected Area and several of the desert castles.

The three types of pass

The three versions differ only in the number of days at Petra. The Jordan Wanderer includes one day at Petra, the Jordan Explorer two consecutive days and the Jordan Expert three consecutive days. Everything else is the same. If you are unsure, many travellers are glad they chose two days: Petra is far larger than most people expect.

How the visa waiver works

Buy the pass online before you arrive and show it with your passport at immigration. The visa fee is waived only if you stay in Jordan for at least three consecutive nights; if you leave sooner, you will be asked to pay the visa fee when you depart.

The waiver applies to nationalities that can obtain a visa on arrival and is accepted at the main international entry points, including Queen Alia International Airport in Amman. Check the official Jordan Pass website for the current list of nationalities and border crossings.

Is the Jordan Pass worth it?

For most visitors, yes. The tourist visa fee and a single Petra ticket bought separately already cost more than a Jordan Pass, and the other sites come as a bonus.

It is less useful if you do not need a visa or already have one, if you are visiting for less than three nights, or if you do not plan to visit Petra. In those cases, compare the price of the pass with the tickets you will actually use.

What is not included

Petra by Night, guides, transport, jeep tours in Wadi Rum, Dead Sea beaches and hotel day passes are not part of the pass. Some religious sites managed by their own institutions, such as the Baptism Site and Mount Nebo, also sell their own tickets.

Using the pass

After buying online you receive a pass with a QR code. Save it on your phone and keep a printed copy. The pass is valid for twelve months from the date of purchase and, once used at the first site, for two weeks. Your Petra days must be consecutive, starting on the day of your first entry.
